2006 Raoul Wallenberg Day

Join the Swedish and the Jewish communities in paying tribute to the Swedish diplomat and hero Raoul Wallenberg

who saved the lives of as many as a hundred thousand people condemned to certain death by the Nazis during World War II.

His fate has remained in a cloud of mystery after he disappeared on January 17, 1945, in Hungary and was subsequently imprisoned in the Soviet Union. Raoul Wallenberg would have celebrated his 94th birthday this year. In 1987 he became the second person in history to be awarded honorary US citizenship.

He is also an honorary citizen of Canada and Israel, and has received numerous distinctions.

We will meet at the Wallenberg plaque, set up by the Jewish Second Generation Group twenty years ago at the waterfall in the Queen Elizabeth Park, at 2 pm on January 29, 2006 (that has been proclaimed "Raoul Wallenberg Day" by the City of Vancouver). There will be a small ceremony and speeches and optional no-host coffee or tea at the Seasons Hilltop Bistro.
