As Japanese vice-consul in World War Two in Kaunas, Lithuania, against his government’s orders, he saved the lives of thousands of Jews. He allowed them to escape the forces of Nazi Germany by issuing transit visas to travel to Japan, with the assistance of the Dutch honorary consul Jan
Zwartendijk. Today, he is one of Japan’s revered heroes.
