The WALLENBERG-SUGIHARA CIVIL COURAGE AWARD will be presented to Mary Kitagawa, OBC, who raised awareness of the injustices suffered in World War Two by Japanese-Canadian students. She overcame indifference and discrimination, resulting in UBC granting honorary degrees to 76 students who were interned before graduating.

H.R. MacMillian Space Centre, 1100 Chestnut Street,, Vancouver, BC
THE WAR BETWEEN US starts in 1942 in the BC interior and deals with the effects of the Canadian Government's internment of the west-coast Japanese community. Two women become unlikely friends under extraordinary and tragic circumstances. A local wife and mother struggling with economic hardship and a young middle-class Japanese-Canadian woman from Vancouver grapple with their situation, as a frontier town becomes a Japanese community overnight.
